…establish an overall colour scheme for the whole home (or at least the common areas to start). A consistent colour in these areas or on the trim throughout the home establishes the connection between rooms while giving an open concept feel.

…emphasize a noteworthy design element. Example: Fireplace, paint it a different colour.

…forget that a colourful accent does not have to be bright colours: subtle works great too!
